Cambridge City Foodbank is delighted to welcome Steve Clay as its new Chief Executive Officer and successor to Margaret Saner, who has served as volunteer CEO for two years.
Steve, who is set to join Cambridge City Foodbank on 1st December 2022, is currently CEO of YMCA Black Country in the West Midlands and brings many years’ experience in the charity sector.
With demand for support from the foodbank growing rapidly across the city, Steve will be responsible for ensuring the day-to-day operations of Cambridge City Foodbank are run as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Speaking about his appointment, Steve said: “I’m delighted to be joining the Cambridge City Foodbank team later this year. Its vital services are becoming even more necessary with the current cost of living crisis. I’m looking forward to meeting the dedicated staff and volunteers and I’m also keen to see how the services can be further enhanced to meet the growing and urgent need.”
Cambridge City Foodbank recently revealed that May 2022 has been its second busiest month on record, with 1,205 people in Cambridgeshire receiving an emergency food parcel from the foodbank. High demand is set to continue into the autumn and winter months as the cost of living crisis intensifies.
Stephen Thornton, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Cambridge City Foodbank, said: “We are very much looking forward to Steve joining us. He brings very considerable experience of leading charitable organisations and will help us significantly expand our offering in the context of so many people facing the prospect of a bleak winter ahead. I want to pay tribute to outgoing CEO, Margaret Saner, who as a part-time volunteer has steered the foodbank so ably over the last two years. Margaret will remain with us as a volunteer, with responsibility for recruiting and retaining our very many volunteers.”
Cambridge City Foodbank has eight foodbank centres and two Fairbite stores across the city. It has a number of food collection points in large supermarkets, including all of the big Tesco stores, Waitrose in Trumpington, Sainsbury’s on Brooks Road and in Eddington, Asda in the Beehive Centre and Cambourne Co-Op. The community can also drop off donations at the Cambridge City Foodbank warehouse near Milton on Mondays and Fridays, 10.30am-1.00pm, and on Thursdays 6.15pm-7pm.
